Retainers: Protecting Your Investment

The final stage of orthodontic treatment is called the retention phase. This stage starts the day the braces are removed. Retention time is individually assessed. Teeth have a memory and are anxious to return towards their original positions. Retainers support the teeth in their corrected positions. Failure to wear the retainers as directed, even for a short time, may cause a relapse; therefore, cooperation by the patient is essential. There are two main types of retainers:

Fixed or Removable Retainers?

  • Fixed retainer
This type of retainer is permanently bonded to the inside of your front teeth. Care must be taken to avoid hard and sticky foods. If it becomes loose, please contact us immediately.
  • Removable retainer:
This type of retainer can be removed when eating and when brushing your teeth. A protective case will be provided in which to store your retainers when you are not wearing them, so they do not get lost or damaged. Retainers are expensive to replace. You will be given instructions regarding how to wear your retainers. Following these instructions will help you to maintain your smile for a lifetime.
