Braces for All Ages and All People
Children
While family dentists often refer patients to Doctor Prosterman, others arrive under their own initiative. One of the most common questions asked is, ‘when should orthodontic treatment begin?’ The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that children be seen by 7 years of age to assess the need for orthodontics. Following the consultation, Dr. Prosterman discusses with you whether the timing is appropriate to begin orthodontic treatment. The answer depends on the orthodontic problem presented. Certain problems are best treated early, while others can wait until the permanent teeth erupt and further growth and development occur.
Adolescents
Most of our adolescent patients are very motivated and happy to start treatment. We try to establish a relationship with our patients in which they understand that they are a very important factor in the success of their treatment. In order to get excellent treatment results, we often need the cooperation of our patients in wearing elastics, etc. Our team is very strict about oral hygiene. We enforce proper brushing and flossing in order to avoid any scarring of the teeth when the braces are removed.
Adults
Adult orthodontics is much more common these days. In fact, the American Association of Orthodontists cites that one in five orthodontic patients is over the age of 21.
Many adults are choosing to receive treatment because they understand the importance of maintaining their health and they want to feel better about their appearance. Many adults with orthodontic problems did not have the opportunity to wear braces as a child. They often became self-conscious of their teeth and avoided smiling.
For many adults, the thought of wearing metal braces is enough to discourage them from seeking treatment. However, advances in today’s orthodontic treatment options offer a variety of braces and appliances that are comfortable and aesthetic, including ceramic braces and clear aligners (Invisalign).
While orthodontics can have great cosmetic benefits, many adults do not realize that well aligned and properly fitting teeth (the bite or occlusion) may also enhance their ability to keep their teeth for a lifetime.
Teeth that are properly aligned are easier to keep clean with flossing and brushing and may help prevent cavities and gum disease. Orthodontic treatment can help boost your self-confidence, allowing you a better quality of life and the freedom to smile without holding back! We work closely with your general dentist and other specialists to provide results that are very rewarding.

Types of braces
Metal
Metal braces are still the most common type of braces. They are made of high-grade stainless steel. Today’s metal braces are much smaller, more comfortable, and more attractive than the old style ‘train-track’ braces. With metal braces, you have the option of adding coloured elastics for a unique and colourful smile.
Ceramic braces
Ceramic braces are made of translucent (clear) material. They are most popular with adult patients due to their cosmetic appeal. The disadvantage of ceramic braces is that they are larger and more fragile. For these reasons, ceramic braces tend to be used more on upper front teeth than on lower teeth.
